Hubbards Shrimp Cannery Beach Dive Site
Hubbards, Nova Scotia
Certification Level: Novice
Overview:
This is a small beach area and can be fairly busy during the summer months for locals. This dive site/beach is adjacent to an old shrimp cannery long since closed. The local community keeps the few steps down to the beach, and the roadside widened.
The beach is sandy , changing over to gravel and eventually silty/mud. Off to the right, around the wharf and on the flanks of the little point with the old cannery is nice boulders with richer marine life.
Parking:
There is parking along the side of the road.
Facilities:
none on site
Site Entry/Exit
Very easy entry into the water, just a few steps down to the water
Points of interest/natural navigation aids:
lobsters and lots of marine life (moon snails, pollock, sea ravens, sculpins, cunner, flounder), sand/mud bottom
Bottom Composition & Depth:
Depth ranges from 15ft/5m to 48ft/14m
Visibility:
Visibility varies based on many influences including the weather - rain runoff, wind and waves - the tides and the time of the day. Improved visibility may be experienced during slack high tide. Visibility of 30ft to 40ft/9m to 12m is not uncommon for this site.
Hazards and Safety:
In the winter be careful of the steps down to the beach, in warmer months be careful of boat traffic
